DILUTION RATE
To prepare isotonic solution, use dilution table below:
Volume of Liquid Concentrate | Add clean, fresh drinking water to make up to: |
40mL | 500mL |
80mL | 1L |
160mL | 2L |
1L Pack | 12.5L |
5L Pack | 62.5L |
20L Pack | 250L |
FEEDING RATE
Continue to provide fresh, free choice drinking water at all times including periods when ProfeSTART isotonic solutions are being fed.
CALVES
1-1.5L of fresh diluted solution per 10kg bodyweight daily divided into 2 or more feeds. 2L of diluted solution fed morning and night will be adequate for routine supplementation.
Best Results: Add FortiMILK® GREEN to ProfeSTART isotonic solution to help maintain normal microbial activity and gut health in calves.
FOALS
1-1.5L of fresh diluted solution per 10kg bodyweight daily divided into 2 or more feeds. 2L of diluted solution fed morning and night will be adequate for routine supplementation.
LAMBS-KIDS-CRIAS & FAWNS
Feed 150-200mL of fresh diluted solution 2-4 times daily as required.
PIGLETS
Feed 30-40mL of fresh diluted solution 3-4 times daily. A litter of week old piglets can consume 2-3L daily. Individual weaner pigs can consume 1-2L daily.
DOGS-CATS
Feed fresh diluted solution using the following guide:
Cats & Miniature Dogs (<5kg) | 125mL 2-3 times daily |
Small Dogs (5-10kg) | 250mL 2-3 times daily |
Medium Dogs (11-20kg) | 500mL 2-3 times daily |
Large Dogs (>20kg) | 750mL 2-3 times daily |
SHEEP
Ewes requiring an energy and mineral salt boost can be fed 160mL of Undiluted Liquid Concentrate using suitable drenching equipment. Repeat 4-6 hours as required.

WHY PROFESTART ELECTROLYTE?
ProfeSTART Electrolyte is a non-antibiotic isotonic energy and electrolyte supplement for calves, foals, kids, crias, fawns, piglets, dogs and cats. Suitable as a first feed for brought-in or stressed calves, lambs and pigs, and as a supplement for racing animals.
BENEFITS
-
- Application – convenient formulation; animals can be left on milk feeds; liquid or powder options.
- Performance – balanced formulation; quicker response and turnaround observed.
- Price – exceptional value versus bicarb based alternatives.
ZERO-BICARBONATE FORMULATION
Although all alkalising agents have similar effects, acetate has several advantages over bicarbonate:
1. Acetate helps sodium and water to be absorbed in the small intestine but bicarbonate does not;
2. Acetate is a source of energy but bicarbonate is not;
3. Acetate will not alkalinize (raise the pH) in the abomasum or true stomach whereas bicarbonate will (i.e.
creates an environment which may encourage the overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria in the small intestine);
4. Acetate does not interfere with milk whereas bicarbonate is known to interfere with milk curd formation.
ISOTONIC SOLUTION
Commercial electrolyte preparations vary in the amount of particles dissolved in the solution. Most products
are “hypertonic” containing a very large amount of glucose in the preparation. This will draw water out of
the intestine, instead of into it, in order to equalize osmolarity on both sides of the intestine.
In contrast, “isotonic” solutions have a similar amount of particles in the solution as is normally found in the
bloodstream. This prevents water being drawn out of the intestine after ingestion.
Isotonic solutions provide a better option for restoring lost fluids and electrolytes for routine use.
STRONG IRON DIFFERENCE
“Strong ion theory” encourages the use of products that deliver an excess of strong cations (sodium and
potassium) relative to the concentration of strong anions (chloride) in order to help correct a portion of
the acid-base balance in the blood.
While most commercial products fall well short of the required SID range, ProfeSTART ELECTROLYTE
complies with the SID recommendations providing a balanced formulation.
